Mort and Marie Backus got started in the automobile business nearly 60 years ago. Mort bought and sold one vehicle at a time while still operating the family farm. In the early years, these car sales and repairs served to fulfill Mort’s mechanical interests. Soon one car in stock became three or four and people began to seek out Mort for help with their transportation needs.
In 1954 Mr. and Mrs. Backus obtained dealer’s licensing and demonstrator plates. During these years Mort worked in the one stall garage behind the home where he was born. As the business grew, it became evident that expansion in facilities was a must. In 1958 Mort and Marie began construction on a new building with showrooms and work bays.
While Mort and Marie were operating the business and taking care of customers, they were also taking very good care of their four young sons, Jack, Pat, Mike and Paul. When the boys became big enough to handle a wash mit or a whisk broom and tall enough to see between the dash and the steering wheel, they helped their parents with the business. As each of the boys graduated from college they came back to join the family in the full time operation of the business. Nicole, Jordan, Aaron and Peter are part of the third generation of Backuses that also work at the dealership.
